Painting in watercolors is exciting, challenging, addictive yet always rewarding! For 30 years I made my living as a fabric designer, using water color based gouache as a medium. I thought I knew it all to make the switch from gouache to watercolors. I could not have been more wrong.
Watercolor painting has a life of its own and many times the colors and the resulting effects move and travel where you do not want them to go. But once you start with watercolors, you will become addicted and you will be rewarded with a life time of joy.
Watercolors are free-flowing, spontaneous and sometimes unpredictable. Does this somehow reflect your personality? Are you spontaneous and sometimes unpredictable? But are you also tenacious? You need some good old stamina, will power and plain old stubbornness to succeed.
You will see that the first time your paint touches the wet surface of the paper. How exciting! You can express yourself and your innermost feelings with watercolors far easier than with any other medium. Your ever changing moods, the changes in your everyday life, your surroundings and the fleeting moments of pure beauty we experience in nature all around us, everything contributes towards your art. These are the special moments we can catch that build cornerstones of memories. Let me explain. I can look at a watercolor painting that I painted years ago and re-live the overwhelming joy and happiness that I experienced way back then. I felt blessed, privileged and ever so grateful to be at that place at that moment of time in the sunshine surrounded by the beauty of a simple country lane.
